This traveling exhibition details the story of Francis Gary Powers, a former U.S. Air Force fighter pilot, who completed twenty seven U-2 photographic reconnaissance missions for the CIA, including several over flights of the Soviet Union, until shot down by a Soviet surface-to-air missile on May 1, 1960. Powers, an American, was subsequently convicted of being a spy and was held in a Russian prison until February 11, 1962, when he was dramatically exchanged for a Soviet spy Colonel Rudolph Abel, in the first Cold War spy exchange. Photos, newsreels, and personal items document the story. The exhibition will be in the main lobby of AMSE.

DOE Facilities Bus Tour
Various locations in Oak Ridge
This tour is free with paid admission to the American Museum of Science and Energy, and runs Mondays – Fridays during the summer (no weekends), except holidays. Explore the original Manhattan Project sites around Oak Ridge and learn the history behind the development of the world’s first atomic weapon which helped to end WWII. Cold War Crisis: The U-2 Incident

This traveling exhibition details the story of Francis Gary Powers, a former U.S. Air Force fighter pilot, who completed twenty seven U-2 photographic reconnaissance missions for the CIA, including several over flights of the Soviet Union, until shot down by a Soviet surface-to-air missile on May 1, 1960. Powers, an American, was subsequently convicted of being a spy and was held in a Russian prison until February 11, 1962, when he was dramatically exchanged for a Soviet spy Colonel Rudolph Abel, in the first Cold War spy exchange. Photos, newsreels, and personal items document the story. The exhibition will be in the main lobby of AMSE.

Christmas shoppers will find many hand-crafted items in the gift shop.
